About Miriam

“From a very young age I have always been affected emotionally by the Irish landscape and its elements. In my process of painting I try to encapture this feeling that I get from the landscape to recreate it for myself and others. I accomplish this using a mixture of colour and texture through the medium of oils.”

Hi there. My name is Miriam Dowling and I am an Irish artist, born in Dublin in 1982. As a child I always had a love for creating. If I wasn’t outdoors playing I was spending my time drawing, painting, and making things. I also had a huge fascination with the great outdoors and nature. My most cherished memories from childhood are from when my family and me would stay in a farmhouse in the Wexford countryside, surrounded by animals and green fields, or in County Kerry where I would spend all my days being thrown about by the Atlantic waves. I always loved the comfort and excitement of the familiarity of the same places we would visit as a family around Ireland every year. I now love visiting these places and new places, with my own family making new memories whilst still cherishing my own childhood memories.

Growing up I knew that art was my joy and sanity, so when I was 16 I decided to take up oil painting classes and started to learn the skills and techniques of using oil paint. I then went onto study at Dun Laughaire institute of Art Design and technology and got my Degree in Fine Art in 2003. This set me up with a determination to make a career out of my art. It took me a few years to figure it all out but I always knew I wanted to be a painter. I can now proudly say after 20 years of painting that I am now a full time artist and loving it. I also love to share my passion with others and began to teach art to children and adults through classes and workshops in 2016.

Over the last 20 years of painting my work has evolved into a certain distinctive style. I mainly focus on painting land and seascape from places around Ireland. Painting nature like this gives me great Joy and freedom. I am a very grounded and peaceful person and I try to depict this feeling in my work with scenes of calm and turmoil in nature. In my painting I want to evoke certain feelings and emotional connections with nature and deliver a sense of peace, familiarity and comfort for myself and others. As a visual artist I believe that a painting can say a thousand words. I want to portray the true essence and energy of a place using my paints through textures and colours. Through this, I would like the viewer to feel allured into the paintings and get a sense of being with nature, to touch the waves or the grass and feel the breeze on their faces. It brings me great pleasure and joy to create these snippets of nostalgia and sentiment for myself and others to enjoy and cherish in their own homes.
